Our History: The Root Cellar Building

Welcome to Root Cellar Market, where history meets sustainability in the heart of Pringle Creek. Our marketplace will be housed in a charming and historic building that dates back to the 1930s. This two-story, 3,000 square-foot brick root cellar has stood the test of time, preserving the character and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

A Glimpse into the Past

Constructed in the late 1930s, the Root Cellar building was originally known as the Root House. It served as a vital storehouse for crops grown at the nearby Fairview Training Center. Designed to maintain a constant temperature, it was ideally suited for storing a variety of crops such as potatoes, onions, and beets. This practical purpose ensured that the building played a crucial role in the local agricultural community, supporting the preservation of fresh produce year-round.

Architectural Highlights

The building's robust structure features a gable roof and bracketed eaves that highlight the architectural style of the period. The exterior walls are a mix of traditional brick and a partial stucco skim coat, adding to its rustic charm. Six original wood-sash windows adorn the upper reaches of each facade, providing ample natural light and a touch of vintage elegance. The north side originally featured a large freight door, a remnant of its days as a bustling storage facility.

Preserving the Legacy

As we restore and repurpose the Root Cellar building, we are committed to maintaining its historical integrity. Inside, you’ll discover beautifully preserved wood ceilings and exposed brick walls that tell the history of its storied past. These elements, combined with modern amenities and eco-friendly practices, create a unique atmosphere that honors the building’s heritage while looking toward a sustainable future.

A Modern Revival

In time, the Root Cellar building will be more than just a historical landmark; it will be a vibrant center for community and sustainability. The ground floor will be home to Root Cellar Market, a marketplace dedicated to offering locally-sourced, eco-friendly products that cater to the needs of our neighbors and visitors alike.
